How to Balance Flavors in Distilled Cocktails

Balance is one of the cornerstones of cocktail skills. A well-balanced drink is one where various flavour profiles work harmoniously together, while one that’s out of sync will likely feature one overpowering the others. In order to master this art form it’s essential that one understands how flavour groups interact. Many factors can cause drinks to go off balance – from their temperature or whether or not their garnish fits – yet there are numerous solutions that can restore harmony within a drink.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to restore balance to any drink is adding water. This may come in the form of stirring or shaking water, tonic water in highballs, or fresh juices – or all three at once! Diluting an alcoholic heat and burn will allow other flavors to come through and create harmony on your palate.

One way to add sweetness and balance a drink is by including sweet elements, such as citrus fruit, simple syrup, flavoured liqueurs or even fresh fruit pieces. Sweet ingredients balance acidity by counteracting its acidity while providing structure to the beverage and helping the other flavors shine through more prominently than their acidic counterparts for a smooth finish.
